About

Rob Watts Rogue Four Design Profile Photo Blue

I established Rogue Four Design in 2006 to work in the fields I love: film, music and books. I have accomplished that and worked on some fantastic projects with exceptional talent.

I started as a junior designer the week after graduating with a BA (Hons.) Graphic Design degree at The Surrey Institute of Art & Design (now the University of the Creative Arts), working for a company at the forefront of music industry design and the evolving field of DVD design. The position gave me an excellent understanding of the print process, developing digital fields and working within the entertainment industry.

I have taken that knowledge and built on it, still involved in those areas, but specialising in bespoke print packaging for home entertainment. I work closely with clients to develop their ideas, creating solutions that meet their brief but also receive critical acclaim.

I also believe that graphic design is not just about the design but also the process and the relationships built through the process. It is about working professionally and honestly, being organised, understanding that goalposts move and things are needed at short notice, and being proactive and flexible to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines. And learning. Every day is a school day.

I am very lucky to do something that I love doing. I do love the detail of it. Matching old typefaces to use in digital reissues and using appropriate assets to complement existing designs. Using Roman hanging punctuation – using appropriate en-dashes (not hyphens!). Streamlining workflow to work faster, allowing tight deadlines to be met and more time to explore creative solutions.

The aim is to keep progressing, keep learning and build Rogue Four Design into something that will exist even when I stop working.
