The print files for The Proud Valley left Rogue Four Towers recently. A Studio Canal Vintage Classic title from 1940, it features the wonderful singing voice of Paul Robeson and tells the story of a small Welsh mining community dealing with the closure of the local pit, a story that will resonate with many.
The look of this title works neatly with the Ealing Classic feel, an illustrative cover, aspiring to 1930s travel posters. As so often is the case with the older titles, the archive images were poor quality, so an illustration was the natural way forward. The sweeping title treatment was taken from an original poster and the composition was created based around those languid valley lines.
The film was recently part of the BFI’s, Black Star season. Celebrating the range, versatility and power of black actors.
